The 2027 NCAA men's basketball tournament will feature 76 teams for the first time, up from 68. Selection Sunday is March 14, the Opening Round runs March 16–17, and the Final Four is at Ford Field in Detroit on April 3.
The expansion is the story of this tournament — and the reason every explainer written before 2027 is now out of date.
What changed, and what did not
The single-elimination core is untouched: 64 teams still reach the First Round, and one loss still ends a season. What expands is the road into it. The Opening Round grows to 12 games, played across two sites for the first time — Dayton, Ohio and Wichita, Kansas — before the 64-team First Round begins.

The women's tournament runs on a parallel track: Selection Sunday on March 14, and a Final Four on April 2 with the championship on April 4 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus.
How the field is built
Two routes into the bracket, and every team takes one of them:
- Automatic bids — won by winning a conference tournament. Every conference, from the largest to the smallest, sends its champion. This is the mechanism that produces the famous upsets: a small school that wins three games in four days in its conference tournament earns the same place in the bracket as a national powerhouse.
- At-large bids — selected by a committee from the teams that did not win their conference, judged on the whole season.
The committee also handles seeding, and it is the part fans argue about most. Seeding decides not just who you play but where — the tournament is deliberately routed so that highly seeded teams play closer to home in the early rounds, which is a real competitive advantage.
Why the First Four matters
The Opening Round is not filler. Its winners advance into the First Round as lower seeds — and those teams have, more than once, gone on deep runs. Playing an extra game in March is a burden, but it is also an extra competitive game before facing a higher seed that has been idle for a week.
Why single elimination is the whole point
Every other major American post-season is a series. The NCAA tournament is one game per round, which is why it produces outcomes no other format does: a team can beat a giant and be gone two days later, and a twelve seed beating a five seed is not an anomaly but a recurring feature. The expansion to 76 teams widens the entry gate without changing that property — more teams get in, and the format still destroys everyone but one.
Coverage is split between CBS and TNT Sports, with the Final Four and championship on CBS in 2027.
March Madness is the one event where a school's basketball shirt matters more than its football one. The Michigan Wolverines Youth Spirit Basketball Jersey ($53.90) and the Georgia Bulldogs Youth Lightweight Basketball Jersey ($53.90) are both youth-cut basketball designs at the same price, which makes them the easier pair to buy as a set.
